INMINENTE RIESGO DE PARALIZACION DE MINAS EN PERU POR PROTESTAS

El país sudamericano está sumido en protestas antigubernamentales desde la destitución del presidente izquierdista Pedro Castillo el 7 de diciembre. Se han bloqueado carreteras en todo el sur, rico en cobre, lo que ha amenazado la producción y el transporte del metal, ha afectado a las acciones de algunas empresas y ha disparado unos precios ya de por sí elevados.

Las mayores minas de cobre de Perú han sido capaces de mantener la producción a pesar de los bloqueos de carreteras, los ataques y las protestas que han sacudido a la nación andina durante más de dos meses y que han llevado a advertencias de paros de producción, mostró el miércoles un análisis.

La mina Constancia, de Hudbay Mineral Inc (HBM.TO), ha visto cómo el consumo de energía empezaba a disminuir recientemente. Otras, como Cerro Verde, de Freeport-McMoRan (FCX.N), se encuentran en niveles normales o elevados. Un índice combinado de seis minas clave está cerca de lo normal.

La portavoz de Freeport-McMoRan, Linda Hayes, declaró: "Seguimos operando, pero hemos limitado el rendimiento de nuestras fábricas en aproximadamente un 10% para hacer frente a las interrupciones intermitentes del suministro".

Las otras empresas no respondieron de inmediato a las solicitudes de comentarios sobre la actividad en sus minas en Perú.

La actividad minera es clave para mantener el flujo del suministro mundial de cobre. La correduría Jefferies dijo en una nota del 31 de enero que alrededor del 30% del suministro de cobre peruano estaba en riesgo por los disturbios, un "potencial positivo para el precio del cobre".
